His Birth
Pastor George Lewis began his earthly journey on August 23, 1942, in the city of Gainesville, Alabama. He was the second child born to the union of Floyd and Lottie Lewis.
His Life
Pastor Lewis spent his early childhood in Porter, Alabama, where he earned the nickname “Peter.” While in Porter, he accepted Christ at an early age and was educated in the public school system.
In 1962, Pastor Lewis received an Associate of Science Degree in General Education from Daniel Payne Jr. College in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1965, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee.
He then went on to complete graduate coursework in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
A Computer Programmer Analyst for 32 years, Superintendent Lewis retired from Arnold Engineering Development Center in 1998.
On September 1, 1968, he was united in holy matrimony to Beverly Shaw Lewis of Tullahoma, Tennessee. Their lives were blessed with two children.
In 1998, Pastor Lewis and Evangelist Beverly Lewis celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary with the renewing of their vows at Shaw Temple Church in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
His Church Life
Pastor Lewis was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost in 1974. Soon after, he accepted his call into the ministry and was ordained in 1977. He began his Pastoral Ministry in 1979, when he and his wife founded the Manchester Church Mission.
Under Pastor Lewis’s leadership, the congregation grew, a sanctuary was built and the church was renamed the Greater Love Church. In 1995, upon the passing of his father-in-law, Superintendent Emeritus Buford Shaw, he assumed the pastorate of Shaw Temple Church in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
His Civic Life
Well known within the surrounding communities for his generosity, encouraging words and dedication to witnessing, Pastor Lewis led an active jail ministry and visited the hospitals and nursing homes religiously. Furthermore, he often led the invocation at planning commission meetings for the City of Tullahoma and other city events.
A life-long advocate of spiritual growth and education, Pastor Lewis was a member of the Multi-County Ministerial Alliance, an interdenominational coalition of religious leaders and pastors in the Middle Tennessee area, as well as the Holland Scholarship Foundation Committee in Tullahoma.
His Death
Pastor George Lewis departed this life on Monday, October 19, 2009, at 10:15 a.m. His legacy will be celebrated, cherished and remembered by his wife, two children, and a host of family and friends.
